A Painting A Week

Almost done!

Finished up my month of Forensic pathology with a grand total of 1 autopsy (that was enough, really) + numerous bowel resections + wound closures + scalp closures + countless bilateral orchiectomies + 1 neck mass resection. It was a total assault of the senses and I'm going to miss everything and everyone about it dearly. I don't think observing autopsies ever got old, even on the young OD'ers w/ no pathology whatsoever. One of my old attendings always likes to say that no two cases are the same, and you can appreciate how different the anatomy is from one person to the next on a rotation like this one, so of course I tried to watch every single one. And there is nothing like the sunlight hitting a relatively healthy solid organ in the morning. Just some beautiful non-decomposed organs sitting on a chopping block, about to meet steel. Macabre, but it really is striking. In surgery I have an appreciation for just how lovely a good healthy bowel looks under the lights - smooth and shiny. It made me consistently have to ask myself "how did you get here?," but in a good way.

And I will miss the MEs (they were all great, from the quintessential alpha big boss to the other deputy big boss to the slightly grumpy but always nice one, and last but never least, the loveable Pole who is also Frank Sinatra's long lost twin) and techs. Not sure how much I learned since I currently have severe systemic senioritis, but I think I've got my major abdominal anatomy down pat. AND it was great not being the most clueless one in the room for a change, what with all the detectives and other assorted students in there.

love these! love the muted palette; he makes it look like the scenes were under an overcast sky. I know some people think realistic paintings are just redundant (which I do sometimes), but when expertly done like they are here, there's just a mood and a richness that comes from the paint that you can't get from a photograph.

Alex Kanevsky. I am falling in love with these 'blurred out' paintings - paintings that have areas purposely blurred out to give it a sense of movement. They always give the impression that you're looking at something that had happened in a second even though it's been immortalized in the painting. no, I didn't paint this.

My goal for the coming year, besides passing my classes, is to have at least one auction going all the time. Because all I have to do is sell 5,000 paintings at $30 each, and then I will have paid the bulk of all my student loans. Easy breezy
